Geico jumpstarts Mauldin Miracle League

MAULDIN, SC – For seven years, Dennis Raines, has been the baseball champion for children with disabilities in the Upstate. Founder of the Mauldin Miracle League, Raines has transformed the lives of hundreds of families by providing these children with the ability to play baseball in a safe and secure environment. Raines is now beginning a new effort to build an “inclusive playground” that would provide a park for play and recreation designed exactly for their needs and limitations.

“As I began investigating other ways to help our players, I immediately discovered the lack of any other true handicapped accessible playground equipment and knew this would be the perfect compliment to the work we’ve already started,” said Raines. “But, to do it right is a costly effort, which is why I am thrilled that Geico has provided our first $10,000 donation to help make this possible.”

The Mauldin Miracle League Playground will be located at Sunset Park in Mauldin, adjacent to the Miracle League field. It will include a combination of equipment for children with all types of disabilities that encourages exploration and discovery in the same way traditional playgrounds service the general population. The sand base at the current park will also be replaced with a surface that allows for easy wheelchair access as well as a softer landing spot for any slips and falls.

“When Dennis approached us with this opportunity, we knew we wanted to play an important role,” said Grant Sims from the local GEICO office located on Woodruff Road. “It is an amazing way to impact not only these families, but everyone in our community by supporting such a tremendous group of children. Geico is proud to be the inaugural sponsor and challenges other businesses to join us in helping fund this playground because “Every Child Deserves a Chance to Play.”

The Mauldin Miracle League Playground will be custom designed by the leaders in the industry, Landscape Structures, Inc. headquartered in Minnesota. It will cost approximately $200,000 to complete. The City of Mauldin will be graciously providing much of the labor for the park renovations to help keep these costs to a minimum.
