Haley not Willing to Compromise
on Tuesday, March 1, 2011
Our new governor, Nikki Haley, is quickly showing that she is not looking for easy compromises from the Obama administration. Obama said he will support a Senate bill that allows states to design their own health care system beginning in 2014. However, the catch is that the state systems must meet his law's main goals. Haley said the offer was not good enough.
On a different note, Haley was surprised to hear Obama mention the importance of the Charleston Port, but he failed to explain why he had not allotted funding for a study on the port which would allow larger cargo.
Obama seems to think that by allowing the states a little freedom within his health care law, he can win their good will. Haley responded by saying, "He is still not letting the states decide what is best for them." It is a good thing that Haley is standing up for SC and showing that she is not willing to settle for a less than worthy compromise. However, she needs to remember from a public relations approach to avoid one of Sanford's biggest pitfalls: being so stubborn that nothing gets accomplished and people feel that the state is not moving forward.
