Leave it to the State to get right what we have all been thinking: College uniforms are completely out of whack. A lot of people have been talking about the wave of ugly to hit football this year. The new Georgia helmets. The Texas gray jerseys. And what ever the heck was going on with the Maryland jerseys?
You know it is bad when no one is hardly mentioning that Oregon's uniforms continue to assault the eyes.
So why? Well, money, exposure and flash are the main culprits. But from a public relations standpoint, does it go to far? Does the bad press hurt more than it should. At Brett, we say it actually is doing more harm than not. People are focusing on uniforms, but it is doubtful that anyone is running out to buy the new Georgia helmet to display at their desk.
What the universities are failing to realize is they already have strong brands and markets that have a built-in customer base. They get the next wave of buyers (kids now) by creating a positive memory. That is what throwback jerseys are popular --- people want to recapture that moment from their youth when their teams were great. They want that memory. No person 20 years from now is going to want to buy a uniform that was completely reviled.
