Come on everybody!

Ok, we are a sucker for a great story for a South Carolina made good, so the State had his hooked from the word go with a story on Chubby Checker. It has been 50 years since Checker, born Ernest Evans in Spring Gulley, reached international stardom with "The Twist."

A couple of facts on The Twist: Versions of the song had been floating around the South for most of the 1950s until Checker made it a sensation. How did he do it? By actually doing the dance number on stage. According to him, that changed the way people went on a dance floor.

According to the State, “The Twist” went to No. 1 on the Billboard magazine charts. It reached the top again in 1962, making it the only song to be No. 1 twice. Billboard named “The Twist” the No. 1 song from 1958-2008. “The Twist,” undoubtedly, was the biggest song of the ’60s.

Checker still performs, but does feel a little slighted. He feels he should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his contributions to music. May be he should. To borrow the opening line of his most famous song, "Come on Everybody."
