The spotlight shines on Greenville tonight

Republican presidential hopefuls will be in Greenville tonight for the first debate of the 2012 campaign, and to be honest it feels a little bit hollow. For one thing it is so far out in the actual campaign process. Heck, it is way far out when it comes to even the already way to far out primary process.

Now, of course, everyone thought May was going to be the right time for a debate because of what happened in 2008. That campaign started way early because there was no incumbent and it was really an open race. Candidates came out of the woodwork to run. There was a fever early. But this time is different.

The state's GOP has bCheck Spellingeen semi-mum on who actually is attending, but former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, former restaurant executive Herm Cain and former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson are expected to be in Greenville. However, none of the main front runners -- Huckabee, Romney, Gingrich Palin and Trump -- are not because, well, they haven't announced if they are actually going to seek election. As one of my friends posted this morning, tonight is like a preseason game. I kind of agree.

But the spotlight shines on Greenville tonight.
