Surprising Expectations

Noticed an interesting trend this past weekend on Facebook amongst out fans, friends, followers and the like. It was the events they attended or noted that really surprised. For example, Kid Rock played a concert in Greenville this weekend. It is part of a tour for his eighth album, which for the first time in his career contains no rap or metal music...it's all just sort of rock/country. Meh. But apparently a lot of our friends went to the show including professors, accountants, non profit leaders and the like. It was surprising. Didn't see any of them as Kid Rock Fans. Almost as surprising the number of our friends -- especially those not originally from the South -- who tuned in for the start of the NASCAR season.

What does this all mean for a media relations firm? It tells a lot about managing expectations and ambitions for clients. Firms can no longer just guess who their client's audience might be. They need to research and dig because you never know what surprising expectations you might find.
