The Immigration Debate in South Carolina
on Wednesday, February 9, 2011
The State newspaper had an interesting read this morning concerning the latest round of illegal immigration debate in South Carolina. State Sen. Robert Ford brought out the old adage about white and black Americans not wanting to do the jobs that many illegal immigrants do, but he went a little bit farther beyond the rhetoric. Actually, he was pretty blunt saying that whites (blue-eyed brothers) and blacks (brothers) just don't like to work. He added that it really has been that way for a long time
This comes as the Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill that would require police officers to check the immigration status of people arrested for things such as drunk driving, suspicion of breaking the law or even when arrested for breaking a law. As expected, this is a hot button issue, which led to Ford's remarks.
Of course, Ford has come under fire as well today. Interesting how speaking your mind can get you in trouble.
