Has it come to this?

We've been railing against the idea of the over proliferation of youth sports for years now. It used to be kids played in the backyard or the sandlots with their friends until they started Little League baseball or high school football. However, that started to change in the late 1980s as parents started buying instructional videos and hiring trainers for their kids to get an advantage. Why do they need the advantage? Because there is money to be earned in pro contracts and college scholarships. What parent wouldn't want to insure their child's financial success through rigorous, soul-crushing experiences on the athletic field?

Never mind that less than a fraction of athletes get a full ride to college or even sign a professional contract. So to get ahead of the pack, parents start their kids younger and younger while telling themselves that their little ones loved it.

Well, we may have hit rock bottom in this cycle, according to today's New York Times. Sports classes for babies. There are numerous places now that cater to the pre-talking, pre-potty-trained, pre-sleeping through the night set. The terror is not that parents are falling for it, but the reasoning. One woman running an infant sports program raved about parents coming to her now and saying their kids are middle school sports legends.

Holy crap, a middle school sports legend!

Has it come to this?
