Did the Sheriff go too far?
on Wednesday, November 2, 2011
The Upstate has been buzzing about a press conference held by Spartanburg Sheriff Chuck Wright encouraging women to get concealed weapons permits to fend off attackers. Some people are criticizing Wright for encouraging people to arm themselves. Others are defending him by stating that people have the right to defend themselves and that criminals already have weapons. The cultural divide on this matter is pretty steep.
Did the Sheriff go too far?
It is an interesting question. People have the right to defend themselves, but do we want this to be the Wild West where people carry guns and open fire all the time? Case in point is the story out of Pickens County where a woman recently killed four members of her family over insurance claims. It was learned she had fatally shot someone a few years ago as well, but was never arrested. Police said it was self defense. But it begs the question of if it was?
If everyone goes around shooting each other, where does it end?
