U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities celebrates new building in Greenville
on Thursday, October 27, 2011
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Board of Directors for the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities will meet in Greenville this Thursday just the second time since its creation in 2006.
The Board will be in Greenville on Oct. 27 to tour the Endowment’s newly renovated building at 908 East North Street in downtown Greenville.
The Endowment refurbished a long-abandoned building directly on the gateway to downtown Greenville. The cost was $400,000. This new headquarters is a symbol of the Endowment’s commitment to Greenville going forward, said Carlton Owen, president and CEO of the Upstate’s largest foundation.
The U.S. Endowment for Forestry & Communities, Inc. (Endowment) is a not-for-profit corporation established at the request of the governments of the United States and Canada in accordance with the terms of the 2006 Softwood Lumber Agreement between the two countries. The Endowment is one of three entities designated to share in a one-time infusion of funds to support "meritorious initiatives" in the U.S. It has been endowed with $200 million under the terms of the agreement.
The Endowment has been chartered with two purposes: to assist educational and charitable causes in timber-reliant communities; and to aid educational and public-interest projects addressing forest management issues that affect timber-reliant communities, or the sustainability of forests as sources of building materials, wildlife habitat, bio-energy, recreation, and other values.
The Endowment’s Board will dedicate the building with an additional “tree planting” and host an open house/tours/reception guests starting at 5:30 p.m.
