Lost opportunity in a missing letter
on Tuesday, October 18, 2011
Found a fun little article this morning about the Beatles' Paul McCartney auditioning an unnamed drummer just before the band really got going in the early 1960s. Apparently the drummer had put an ad in a local paper about his skills, and McCartney contacted him sight unseen for an audition to be a Beatle.
The story came about when someone found the letter in the back of an old book in Liverpool recently. The letter is now going to auction. McCartney has not been reached for comment. There is a lot of lore about the letter already because of the history of the world's most famous rock group. There has always been debate about the "fifth Beatle." Was it Stuart Sutcliffe, the original bassist who inspired John Lennon, but quit the band and died shortly afterward? Was it drummer Pete Best, who was booted just before the band became world famous? Was it keyboardist (and owner of a killers 70s fro) Bill Preston who actually was credited on the Get Back single. Was it manager Brian Epstein?
Well, the list goes on and now apparently another unnamed name has been added due to a lost opportunity in a missing letter.
