Is it that bad?

We are not going to sugarcoat it, America is in a real crapper right now. The economy is teetering. Millions are unemployed. Partisan politics has created gridlock. Natural disasters have left wide swaths of the country a disaster. Many seem to think we have reached out nadir as a nation.

Have we?

Consider this, 150 years ago today, Union and Confederate troops fought the first major land battle west of the Mississippi River during the American Civil War. The war would drag on for four more years and kill more Americans than all of the wars combined that our battling little nation had waged prior. Yes, we were a young nation in the 1860s and not nearly as "mature" a power as we are today.

But instead of complaining about the problems and lamenting the issues, maybe it is time we compromised and worked together again.

Is it that bad?
