"The Poor" and "The Rich"?
on Tuesday, March 22, 2011
Today's blog is going to be short and sweet. As a reader of the mainstream media news, I am so sick of seeing reporters refer to, "the poor", "the middle class" and "the rich". When I read these terms, a picture develops in my mind of helpless people who are forever locked in there current social class. Wouldn't it be a more accurate representation of who we are as Americans to say "the current poor" or "the current rich"? The simple fact is that in America, no one is forced to stay within any social class. That is, after all, the beauty of our country. The people who the media often lump into "the poor" could be one small step away from getting a job. Just as "the rich" could be one bad business deal away from loosing everything. So, let's remember that as Americans we can determine whether we stay in our current situation or move up or down. Maybe the media needs to remember this as well and stop labeling people as if they are determined to remain in their current situation until death.
