Amidst all of the tragedy and devastation in Japan, a number of different views on the situation have been expressed in the media. The big news today is that comedian, Gilbert Gottfried, who was the voice behind the famous Aflac duck, has been fired for tweeting jokes about Japan. One of his tweets said, "Japan called me. They said 'maybe those jokes are a hit in the U.S., but over here, they're all sinking.'" Obviously, Aflac who is very involved in Japan, did not find this amusing.
And of course what would a major catastrophe be without people getting on You Tube and making fools of themselves trying to talk intelligently about it. A UCLA student named Alexandra Wallace, released a video in which she complains about all of the "Asians" in the library who are on their cell phones talking to friends and family in Japan. She is nice enough to point out that of course she like cares about all the "Asians" who are suffering, but like seriously its totally finals week, like ya know? The video is filled with so many racist comments that some are wondering if it is fake.
On the other side of the coin, some in the media are praising Japan for the lack of looting. They point out that in nearly all recent natural disasters such as the earthquake in Chile and Hurricane Katrina, people quickly began looting. Some are saying it is due to the generally high IQ of Japanese people and others because the Japanese have a strong sense of being responsible to the community. Others may wonder if maybe its because with the increasing danger of radiation, who is worrying about stealing a DVD player?
Whatever view people choose to take, the fact is that natural disasters always seem to bring out the worst in some and the best in others. That is not a complex issue...it's simply human nature.
