The headline news story on my home page when I woke up this morning was, once again, about Egypt. Protestors are accusing Mubarak's regime of ordering the attack of the protest camp in central Tahrir Square that began yesterday afternoon. The violence lasted through the night. However, the attack was not the focus of the story. The main point of the story, and similiar stories, was Shafiq's apology. The AP and NY Times are eagerly reporting on how shocking it is for an Eyption leader to offer an apology. The media seems to be a little too eager to believe in the sincerity of the apology made by Shafiq, who was hand picked by Mubarak over the weekend. The news stories speak of Shagiq as "admitting mistakes" and "promising to investigate" Isn't it a little too soon for the US media to be embacing Shafiq as a leader who is ready to restore peace? With Mubarak promising to finish his term, it is not yet realistic to declare Shafiq as a savior for Egypt.
