Change that Number
on Wednesday, January 5, 2011
One of the maddening this about politics -- and yes there are too many count -- is the cliche that politicians will say anything to get elected, but the tune changes once they get in office. One side of the fence believes this shows the duplicity of elected officials, while the other says these elected folks are good people, but quickly realize they have to play the system to get things done.
And somehow, the American voting public keeps electing new leaders every few years to get change. They don't realize replacing people who are making progress with people who needed to learn the ropes impedes government.
The L.A. Times pointed this out beautifully in this morning's edition. Scores of first-year Republicans elected on the backs of the Tea Party campaign already are cozying up to lobbyists like teens on a date. They are hiring ex-lobbyists as staffers. They are holding fundraisers before even getting into office. Now truth be told this is not the end of the political world. Many of the new congressmen and women are keeping up their pledges, but how long will it take before they change that number as well?
