Labels: Brett Favre, Lou Gehrig, streaks
Okay, we are stealing this one from SI's Peter King, who in turn stole it from a a Detroit writer named Mike O'Hara, but it is kind of cool. Minnesota Viking Brett Favre may miss his first start since 1992 if he doesn't not come out of the locker room against the New York Giants tonight. Big whoop, but fate may be playing a role in this.
Because of wintry conditions in Minnesota, this game was moved to Detroit to be played at Ford Field. Detroit is also the place that New York Yankee great Lou Gehrig's streak came to an end in 1939. Gehrig's consecutive game streak is one of those stats that became part of American sports lore. It provides context for athletes in all sports. Maybe one day they will make a movie about Brett Favre starring a modern version of Gary Cooper about him ending his streak. Ok, maybe not.
One side note on Gehrig streak's ending. Wally Pipp was the player he replaced in the Yankee's line-up years before. He was in the stands the day Gehrig's streak ended. Maybe Don Majkowski, the Packer quarterback Favre replaced, will show up in Detroit tonight?
