The Entertainment War with Hypocrisy

The New York Times had a nice little nugget in its story on the on-going trouble with the Parents Television Council, the conservative group that has waged a war for decency on television in the past decade.

The group recently denounced a Miley Ray Cyrus video where appears in her underwear as "unfortunate she would appear in such a sexualized" performance. Miley's dad is on the council's advisory board. Somehow that wasn't included in the message.

This issue underscores a lot of the hypocrisy that we see in the modern media climate. Fox Television produces racy shows while Fox News denounces such programming. Al Gore has the highest water bill in Tennessee, but demands everyone else cut their usage. The Tea Party denounces career politicians, but keeps voting for people who do nothing but run for office.

The PTC, whether you agree with their tactics or not, is in trouble. It no longer can set an agenda because it has lost credibility. How can it get credibility back? If they were a Brett client, we would advise spending less time issuing silly reports and actually try to create change. Build up their ability to develop as opposed to the ability to denounce. They need to stop their press release glut over every perceived issue and focus on things that actually work.

That way they can end their entertainment war with hypocrisy
