It used to be that "controversy" in American was legitimately controversial. There was an issue or an event, and people either hated it or loved it. That is not really the case anymore as a fracture media market allows almost any event to become "controversial." Hollywood starlet caught drinking? Controversy. Don't like the nominee for the Supreme Court? Controversy. Athlete behaves badly? Controversy. New media platforms allow any one to stand on a soap box and call out controversy.

So how do you avoid the controversy attacks? Think globally. There is more than just one angry blogger or newspaper out there. It is pathetic in some ways when people get on the television screen and proclaim the entire world is embroiled over a certain controversy. They aren't. One thing to remember in this world of slap-dash, can't-wait-until-the-next-story media turnover is that non-controversies quickly become non-stories.
