Have You Tweeted Your Senator Today?

Speaking of legislators (see previous posts), did you know that it is now possible to tell your Senator how you feel about the ongoing healthcare reform discussion via Twitter? That’s right, you can Tweet Your Senator to tell them whether you are yay or nay on President Obama’s proposed changes. But there are a couple of caveats to be aware of when tweeting your Senator. Read these thoroughly before you start a-tweeting!

First, you obviously must have a Twitter account. If you haven’t jumped on the Twitter bandwagon, it’s a relatively simple social media tool to use and a great way to interact with the cyberspace community. Just go to www.twitter.com and create your user name and password to sign up, then tweet away. (Note: The concept of Twitter revolves around the fact that your comments are limited to just 140 characters. That’s characters… not words. So keep those tweets short and sweet).

At the Tweet Your Senator site, all you have to do is enter your zip code, and the site will create a pre-populated tweet (meaning, auto entry in your Twitter account) that is set up to go right to your Senator.

The other major point to take note of before you tweet your senator is that Tweet Your Senator site is hosted by www.BarackObama.com. Thus, the auto-generated Tweet will automatically be asking your senator to support the healthcare legislation. When we entered our zip code for Brett, our Twitter was pre-populated with this message:

“To @JimDeMint: Please vote for meaningful health insurance reform http://bit.ly/3133JC #hc09 #SC #29615”

Since the message is not sent to your Senator until you hit Send, you can go in and edit the message if you wish to take the opposing position on the healthcare issue. For you Twitter newbies, the @ sign notifies the person you are speaking directly to them, and the # sign, called a hashtag, helps Twitterers search for particular topics.
